They argue that the amount of milk ‘wasted’ on such a day can feed thousands of poor instead. Why this ‘excess’ then ?
First of all, those who find this practice a wastage are adviced to use milk in a token way, by using a reduced and diluted form of it.
Now having said that, let’s examine the beliefs and logic behind such act and how right or wrong it is to call anyone a fool for following the custom.
According to the science of Ayurveda, every person has 3 components in them:
1) Vata (Air)
2) Kafa (Cough) and
3) Pitta (Acids)
All three elements are necessary for smooth functioning of our body. However, when the proportion of these components goes out of natural balance, the body begins to suffer under various ailments.
During the month of Shravan, the Vata component of a person gets higher in proportion. During that period, a person must avoid food that increases the Vata component. For example, green leafy vegetable contain higher amounts of Vata in them. Thus a person is asked to avoid them during the rainy season (especially Shravan month) to avoid the ailments caused due to excess of Vata. During the rainy season, the cattle also eat lots of grass, and hence their milk is high in Vata and, in modern times, is succeptible to viral infections. Thus, milk is considered harmful during the Shravan month. Thus Ayurved advices us against consuming milk during Shravan.
In Sanatan Dharm, Bhagwan Shiv is known to consume the poison which came out during Samudra Manthan (Churning of the Oceans). Thus, it’s customary to offer whatever is poisonous to Bhagwan Shiv. So the Hindus offer milk over shivling (Sanskrit for symbol of Shiv) during the month of Shravan as it is considered akin to a poison by the science of Ayurved.
Hinduism says “Feed to others only what you can eat for yourself (Which means, do not offer to others what you will never consume), always give the best to others and do welfare for all. Always take care of the poor and feed them the fresh and healthy food”-(From the Vedas).
Now if we feed the milk or green leafy vegetables, which is poison during the Shravan, then it’s a sin as it will cause them diseases. Instead, we must feed fresh food to poor folks which we eat as well.
Hence, to the ignorant ones who do not know any better, let’s just clarify at once that Sanatan Dharm is a spiritual philosophy and a way of life. Science is something inherent to it and at the same time it’s a philosophy much beyond those realms.
If you dive deeper into Ayurveda, you will see that during monsoons it is prohibited to use dairy products. Our ancestors knew this and during old times, people compared milk with into venom on the onset of monsoons. They condemned the consumption of milk completely so that they can protect themselves from diseases. This is the time when the rheumatic diseases flourish at their fullest. Due to an imbalance in Vatta, Pitta and Kapha, we become prone to diseases.
So they offer that milk to Shiva Linga, Shiva being the Neel-kanth.
As the season transitions from Summers to Winters during the monsoons, the levels of Vatta in our body rises. This is the reason why our ancient scriptures tell us to offer milk to Lord Shiva during the months of Monsoons. During this season, the cattle eats many insects and bacteria along with the grass. So the milk supplied by these cattle are not fit for our consumption. Offering this venomous milk to Lord Shiva is just a way to protect ourselves from deadly diseases during monsoons.
To get positive energy from the environment
Shiv Lingas are placed at the most pious place, garbh-griha, in temple. At this location, there is tremendous amount of positive energy flowing all around. Hindus visit the temples not just to respect Gods but also to energize themselves with positive energies.
When milk is poured on the Shiv-Lingam to do milk abhishek the flow of positive energy starts getting accumulated towards Shiv Lingam so a person who is devotee of Bhagwan Shiv when is closer to the Shiv Lingam and bathes Shiv Lingam, he accepts the flow of positive energy into his body.
Milk is very good conductor of positive energy. Milk of Indian cow (Not Jarsicow but Desi cow like Gir) when poured on Shivling reciting mantras – strengthens mind, body and inner consciousness of a person.
History behind it
During Samudra Manthan (churning of milk ocean) a deadly poison halahalemerged which had power to spread and completely endanger life of all beings. Then all devtas requested Bhagwan Shiv to save the world from the deadly poison. Bhagwan Shiv (Mahadev) took the divine responsibility of saving everyone, he drank all the poison and conserved it on his kanth (कंठ).
The magnitude of toxic level of halahal was tremendous, though it did not had any effect on Bhagwan Shiv, its heat was enormous, to calm down its impact Devtas performed Ganga Abhishek on Mahadev.
Only snakes came forward to support the divine cause of Bhagwan Shiv, they also drank and took some of the poison in their inner fangs. From that day onwards, some snakes became more poisonous.
The Milk Abhishek done by devotees of Shiv on Shiv Lingam is also symbolic representation of abhishek done during Samudra Manthan and they express their gratitude like devtas did after manthan.
