India top ranked in the Data usage per mobile phone
Over the last two decades, the number of global Internet users has skyrocketed. If this was a measure of economic performance, then it would be possible for all countries to be said have made significant developments over the same time.
With the consumption of 150 crore gigabytes of mobile data per month, India is now the number one country in the world in mobile data consumption.
India has the world’s highest number of internet users, with 699 million users connected. In India, the majority of internet users are found in urban areas, as there is less access in the rural areas of the country. Like China, the primary link between the population and the internet is mobile smartphones.
Increased availability of bandwidth, cheap data plans and increased awareness driven by government programs seem to have rapidly bridged the digital gap between urban and rural India. Consequently, the penetration in rural India has increased from 9 percent in 2015 to 25 percent in 2018.
NITI Aayog CEO (chief executive officer) Amitabh Kant, tweeted that India has become “world’s no 1 mobile data consuming the country.”
Amazing! With 150 cr gigabytes per month of mobile data consumption India is now world’s no 1 mobile data consuming country. It’s mobile data consumption is higher than USA & China’s mobile data consumption put together.

In the recent past, India has witnessed a surge in mobile data consumption, mainly with the introduction of Reliance Jio, which further led to competition in data plans among telecom companies. Earlier this year, Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani had also claimed India’s numero uno position in mobile data usage adding,” Jio users consumed more than 100 crore GB of data per month on the Jio network and that’s more than 3.3 crores GB a day.”
The report claimed that an average mobile internet user in India spends almost 70 percent of the time on apps like Facebook and WhatsApp, and music and entertainment apps. This is much more than by people in the US, who visit these apps for only 50 percent of the time they spend on the mobile phone. It further said that on an average, a user in India spends 200 minutes a day on mobile apps, lower than the US average of 300 minutes a day.
Internet users in India are basically divided into 4 main categories –
4.E – commerce
The report also noted that internet usage is more gender-balanced than ever before with women comprising 42 percent of total internet users.
